If your symptoms are progressing, focus on exercise that takes effort and pushes you. And target your symptoms. Things like yoga, tai chi, Pilates and dance will help with movement, balance, strength and flexibility.

The overall aim of the programme is to improve practitioners psychological wellbeing as well as having a positive effect on mobility problems experienced by people living with Parkinson’s.

Participants will meet fortnightly (minimum 5 people and maximum 10) for about an hour to learn tools which they can take home and practice between classes. It is therefore a combination of class-led and home-based Yoga practice. In the classes, there is an opportunity to talk about experiences with the home practices, the obstacles that inevitably arise, and how to deal with them skilfully. Booking is essential for this class, and please note, there is a flight of stairs to the upper level in the conservatory.

Over the 6 sessions of the programme, participants will learn:

  • to become familiar with the workings of the mind.
  • to deal with negative thinking and negative emotions.
  • basic yoga sequences to improve joint mobility and strength.
  • to use the breath to calm the mind and relax the body.
  • to use therapeutic meditation to acknowledge one’s emotional state of mind.
  • to use visualisations to deal with pain and/or discomfort.

The Adaptive Yoga Programme’s aim is to:

  • improve one’s ability to manage negative thinking and negative emotions.
  • lower blood-pressure.
  • improve sleep.
  • increase confidence and energy levels.
  • improve posture and to reduce muscular pain.
  • to strengthen weak muscles and to release tight ones.
  • increase joint mobility.
  • to give an overall sense of wellbeing and relaxation.
