PD Power
PD Power is a high-intensity, circuit exercise class for people living with Parkinson’s Disease. The core exercises are based on an Australian ‘neuro-active’ exercise philosophy called PD Warrior™, specifically for people with Parkinson’s Disease. Recent evidence suggests that high-intensity exercise can help you to live well with Parkinson's.
The exercises in the class are evidence-based and incorporate 7 core principles: meaningful, complex, powerful, frequency, high effort, specificity and fun!
Who is it For?
- People in the early to mid stages of Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease
- Able to exercise independently
- With a reasonable level of fitness
- Motivated individuals
What type of Exercise is PDPower?
PD Power is not a general exercise program to keep you fit. It is a chance to modify the path of Parkinson’s by committing to making your daily exercise ‘dose’ as important as your medication. The classes are a weekly opportunity to touch base to check you are performing to the best of your ability and working at a suitable intensity; all exercises should be challenging!! A degree of fitness will be beneficial to you and you should expect to feel like you are working hard.
PD Power is led by a specialist neuro physiotherapist who has undertaken additional training and gained their PD Warrior™ Level 1 and 2 qualifications. Please note, it is not within the remit of the class to provide individual physiotherapy assessment and treatment.
How do I join?
Completing an application form is essential because participants must be able to exercise independently and be committed to practising the exercises at home on a regular basis. Please email [email protected] to request a class pack and application form. Capacity will initially be limited to 10 participants and you will be encouraged to complete a feedback form in order to monitor the effectiveness of the group.
It may be useful for partners/carers to attend your first session so they can support you to practise at home, however it is encouraged that you continue to attend independently for the remainder of your sessions where possible, to make the most of building a community and meeting others in a similar situation. There is disabled access and parking on site, and the community centre is situated a 2 minute walk from a bus route.
The cost is £5 per session.
