Parkinson's 5-a-side Chess
5-a-side Chess are a social enterprise who are looking to get people talking about mental health, avoid isolation and loneliness, and get back to socialising in the community.
Parkinson's UK has teamed up with 5-a-side Chess and Suffolk Libraries to hold these sessions, aimed to get people with Parkinson's together in libraries. The game itself is a short from version of chess, a smaller board and less pieces. However, it's not about the chess, it doesn't matter if you're a grand master, or a complete novice who doesn't know the name of the pieces - 5-a-side chess is all about getting into the community, talking to others, meeting new people and being able to have conversations with like minded people.
The other benefits in terms of Parkinson's are the cognitive function brought on by planning your next move and strategy, but also the well being factor of meeting people.
Free tea and coffee is provided, and volunteers are on hand to help.
5-a-side chess is starting at Saxmundham Library, and sessions are on Tuesdays from 10.30am to 12 noon.
