Nordic Walking
Nordic/pole walking is an enhancement of normal walking that uses specially designed poles and specific technique to help propel the body forward. The poles are angled behind when walking and the arms are swung from the shoulder to engage the upper body fully in the exercise. The technique, and fittings at the end of the poles, can be adapted for those who prefer to focus on support more than forward propulsion (the poles being planted in an upright position in front of the body).
The Parkinson’s specific walks include, where appropriate, exercises to help develop muscular strength, flexibility, and balance.
Nordic walking/pole walking involves a cognitive component as well as being a full-body exercise, since it requires co-ordination and concentration.
Positively Nordic’s lessons and walks are led by Nordic Walking UK accredited instructors. Since it is an outdoor activity, participants also enjoy the benefits of ‘green exercise’, as well as it being a social activity. The number of participants per walk is kept quite small to allow for individual attention, and carers are welcome to join the walks.
