Nordic Ambling - Attenborough Nature Reserve

Nordic Walking was developed from a cross country skiing technique in Finland. Using poles individuals could use up to 90% of their body’s muscles when walking, and this has been shown in a range of research to help with gait, co- ordination, balance and posture, as well as overall fitness and stamina.

Alison designed her groups particularly for those who want more of an amble, and chat to like minded people, but who also would like to maintain a level of fitness, and for some improve their overall wellbeing and stamina. The walks are specifically aimed at people who have chronic health issues who perhaps need a more gradual approach to ‘going for a walk’.

Alison has completed several courses beyond the basic Nordic walking instructor course to enable her to work more effectively alongside people with a range of health problems, in particular those with Parkinson’s.

Learning the technique takes 1-4 weeks (sometimes more, depending on the persons health). This is done on a 1:1 basis or in small groups. Poles are provided initially.

All people need is a good pair of walking shoes or trainers, and of course to dress appropriately for the weather. Note : All participants need to be able to walk for at least 20 minutes unaided at first ( use of walking sticks to assist walking would be considered provided the person is deemed ‘safe to walk’).

Partners, friends and or carers are welcome to participate, and actively encouraged to do so.

The cost is £5 per walk.
