Glasgow, Parkinson's Cycling Sessions & Parkinson's Cafe
When
This activity takes place on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month (excluding public holidays). The sessions run from 1pm – 3pm.
We also offer Inclusive Cycling on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of every month which many of our Parkinson's participants attend. There is no charge for this activity
Why cycle?
Cycling improves motor skills, balance and gait, while also improving overall fitness and well-being. According to research cycling is particularly helpful because it increases certain proteins in the brain that help with movement and cognitive function, making it a really beneficial activity.
What ability levels is it suitable for?
These sessions are suitable for everyone – from those who haven’t cycled since their childhood to those who have only recently stopped cycling. We have a range of Van Raam adapted bikes which suit the needs of people who are living with Parkinson's.
Can partners/carers come?
Partners and carers are encouraged to come to sessions although this is not mandatory. We want this to be a social experience and many of our adaptive bikes allow the participant and partner / carer to cycle side-by-side. We have a social table and provide tea, coffee and biscuits. The supportive chat is always excellent!
Instructors
Our instructors are qualified British Cycling Ride Leaders, disability cycle trained and have completed the Parkinson’s Physical Activity and Exercise module. In addition, they are also First Aid trained. They have a wealth of experience delivering cycling activities to a wide range of people and are able to adapt sessions to meet the needs of participants and are fantastic at making sure the adaptive bike is set up specifically for you.
Where are we?
These sessions are run by Easterhouse Phoenix which is a charity that is based in the Phoenix Community Centre. The cycling sessions take place in Easterhouse Sports Centre which is adjacent to the Fort Shopping Centre just off the M8. There is a large car park with easy access into the building and there is also a bus stop right outside.
