Exercise in Disguise (Dance)
This Parkinson’s Dance class is a social, fun 60-minute session designed specifically for the symptoms of Parkinson’s with movement and themes specifically suitable for the class ability.
Combining physio therapeutic effect and the artistic experience of dance to address Parkinson’s symptoms in a fun, social and creative way, the class is based on the Parkinson’s Dance Science approach which was co-founded by Neuro-Physiotherapist Dr Sophia Hulbert and dance artist Aimee Hobbs, with support from Pavilion Dance in Bournemouth. Designed specifically for the symptoms of Parkinson’s the class includes movement and themes aimed to suit the class ability. No dance experience necessary and seated options are available throughout
The class uses fun rhythms and begins with a seated warm up focusing on posture followed by a seated warm up focusing on increasing cardio-vascular activity and range of motion. Standing options are then offered which include some travelling (or seated marching/stepping); ballet influenced stretches and alignment exercises to focus on posture and strengthening of feet and legs, plus a creative section or opportunity to work on a routine together. A cool down with a closing circle ends the class to help everyone relax before returning to their day.
It Is advised to wear comfortable clothing that you can move in without restriction and classes can be done barefoot or in soft soled flat shoes.
Classes are led by an instructor trained and experienced in the Parkinson’s Dance Science Method.
The class takes place in the fully accessible airy and spacious hall at St Georges Parish Church on a Tuesday at 2.15pm. Everyone is welcome including partners, friends and carers.
Classes cost £5 per person. pay as you go
A free taster is offered so that people can try out and decide if it’s an activity they feel would suit them.
